Multi-instrument probing of the polar ionosphere under steady northward IMF

چکیده
Observations are presented of the polar ionosphere under steady, northward IMF. The measurements, made by six complementary experimental techniques, including radio tomography, all-sky and meridian scanning photometer optical imaging, incoherent and coherent scatter radars and satellite particle detection, reveal plasma parameters consistent with ionospheric signatures of lobe reconnection. The optical green-line footprint of the reconnection site is seen to lie in the sunward plasma convection of the lobe cells. Downstream in the region of softer precipitation the reverse energy dispersion of the incoming ions can be identi®ed. A steep latitudinal density gradient at the equatorward edge of the precipitation identi®es the general location of an adiaroic boundary, separating the open ®eld lines of polar lobe cells from the closed ®eld of viscous-driven cells. Enhancements in plasma density to the south of the gradient are interpreted as ionisation being recon®gured as it is thrust against the boundary by the antisunward ̄ow of the viscous cells near noon. Each of the instruments individually provides valuable information on certain aspects of the ionosphere, but the paper demonstrates that taken together the dierent experiments complement each other to give a consistent and comprehensive picture of the dayside polar ionosphere.

Statistical study of the effect of ULF fluctuations in the IMF on the cross polar cap potential drop for northward IMF
[1] Recent studies showed that, regardless of the orientation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF), ULF wave activity in the solar wind can substantially enhance the convection in the high latitude ionosphere, suggesting that ULF fluctuations may also be an important contributor to the coupling of the solar wind to the magnetosphere‐ionosphere system. We conduct a statistical study to und...
متن کاملCLUSTER observations of electron outflowing beams carrying downward currents above the polar cap by northward IMF
Above the polar cap, at about 5–9 Earth radii (RE) altitude, the PEACE experiment onboard CLUSTER detected, for the first time, electron beams outflowing from the ionosphere with large and variable energy fluxes, well collimated along the magnetic field lines. All these events occurred during periods of northward or weak interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). These outflowing beams were generally...
متن کاملHigh-latitude electromagnetic and particle energy flux during an event with sustained strongly northward IMF
We present a case study of a prolonged interval of strongly northward orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field on 16 July 2000, 16:00–19:00 UT to characterize the energy exchange between the magnetosphere and ionosphere for conditions associated with minimum solar wind– magnetosphere coupling. With reconnection occurring tailward of the cusp under northward IMF conditions, the reconnect...
متن کاملEffect of the dawn-dusk interplanetary magnetic field By on the field-aligned current system
[1] A constant dawn-dusk By component is set as an interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) condition in our global MHD simulations to investigate the effects of IMF By on the closure of the field-aligned current (FAC) in the magnetosphere. On the basis of the steady state magnetosphere results, we trace streamlines of FAC from the ionosphere to draw the global geometry of current streamlines in the...
متن کاملA global MHD simulation of an event with a quasi-steady northward IMF component
We show results of the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) global MHD simulations of an event previously examined using Iridium spacecraft observations as well as DMSP and IMAGE FUV data. The event is chosen for the steady northward IMF sustained over a three-hour period during 16 July 2000. The Iridium observations showed very weak or absent Region 2 currents in the ionosphere, which makes the event fav...
